He probably used up all his authentications. The game was shipped with DRM (digital rights management) software called SecuROM as an anti-piracy measure. Unfortunately, every time one installs the game or one's computer updates its drivers, that uses up an authentication. It originally came with three but was increased to five. Once you use up all five you cannot play the game again unless you contact EA's Customer Service and jump through all their hoops to get more.



This is a main reason of why the game was rated so poorly among customers. Not only does it make it so that consumers are basically only "renting" the game they bought, but the DRM failed to prevent the game from being cracked anyways.
